What is Pelvic Girdle Pain?
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) is a common condition affecting the joints, ligaments, and muscles of the pelvic region. It often causes discomfort in the hips, lower back,
groin, or thighs, and while it’s commonly associated with pregnancy, anyone can
experience it due to injury, overuse, or arthritis.
What Causes Pelvic Girdle Pain?
PGP occurs when the pelvic joints and surrounding tissues are misaligned or
strained. Common causes include:
• Pregnancy-Related Changes: Hormonal shifts during pregnancy loosen the ligaments, making the pelvis less stable.• Injuries or Trauma: Falls or impacts can disrupt the pelvic joints.
• Poor Posture or Overuse: Repeated movements or prolonged improper
posture can contribute.
• Arthritis: Degenerative changes in the pelvic joints can lead to pain.
Understanding the underlying cause of your PGP is essential for effective
treatment.
Symptoms of PGP
If you’re experiencing PGP, you may notice:
• Pain in the pelvic region, hips, lower back, or thighs.
• Clicking or grinding sensations in the pelvic joints.
• Difficulty with movements like walking, climbing stairs, or standing on one leg.
• Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting, standing, or activity.
While most commonly linked to pregnancy, PGP can also occur in non-pregnant
individuals due to factors like injury, poor posture, or arthritis.
If you’re experiencing symptoms, know that you’re not alone—and effective help is
available. Early treatment is key to relieving pain and preventing further
complications.
