What are Tennis Elbow & Golfers Elbow?
Your elbow pain may be classified as “tennis elbow” (lateral epicondylitis) or “golfers’ elbow” (medial epicondylitis) regardless of whether you play tennis or golf!
Both injuries may also be caused by other activities which place repeated stress on the elbow joint, such as home decorating or deskwork.
With tennis elbow, you are likely to have overused the muscles that attach to your elbow and move your wrist. The pain is typically on the outside of the elbow joint.
If these muscles and their associated tendons are strained then small tears and inflammation can develop near the bony lump (the lateral epicondyle) on the outside of your elbow.
Tennis elbow can be extremely painful and unfortunately may take a long time to resolve.
Golfers’ elbow by contrast is mostly felt in the inside of the elbow joint. In this instance, your pain may be aggravated by lifting apparently innocuous items such a coffee mug, requiring a fairly tight grip and a slight twist of your wrist.
What is Elbow Bursitis?
Bursas are fluid–filled sacs that surround bony protrusions of the skeleton, cushioning their contact with other bony surfaces.
The elbow bursa surrounds the tip of your elbow.
“Bursitis” is a general term which refers to inflammation of a bursa whether in the shoulder, hip or elbow.
In elbow bursitis, the inflamed sac is typically painful, red and warm to touch.
There are various causes. It can be linked to prolonged pressure on the elbow, trauma, infection, or associated with other medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
How Can You Treat Elbow Pain?
Our osteopaths will first assess your injury to understand the seat of the pain, before making recommendations about treatment.
This may combine deep soft tissue massage, medication, articulation, ice and gentle stretches, while joint manipulation, Kinesiology Tape and/or shock-wave therapy may also be warranted.
