What is Trochanteric Bursitis?
Hip pain that is caused by inflammation of the hip bursa is known as Trochanteric Bursitis.
Bursas are fluid-filled sac found near joints.
In the case of the hip, the inflammation occurs towards the outside point, known as the greater trochanter – hence the name trochanteric bursitis.
If your hip bursa becomes irritated or inflamed, you will experience pain, and the hip itself can be red and warm to touch.
Luckily, it’s a condition that usually responds well to treatment.
What is Hip Arthritis?
When joint surfaces become rough and irregular due to bony growths (known as osteophytes), it is known as osteoarthritis. This can happen in any joint such as the shoulder, knee and hip.
There are four stages in arthritis: minor, mild, moderate, and severe.
It is only when osteoarthritis becomes severe that hip replacement surgery may be warranted due to the bone-on-bone contact.
In the minor, mild and moderate stages, however, most of the pain is caused by the soft tissue surrounding the joint; obviously in this case, that’s the hip joint.
How Do You Treat Hip Pain?
Treatment of hip pain depends on the underlying causes
If our osteopaths have established the cause as bursitis, we might recommend ice, anti-inflammatories (please ask your GP first), Kinesiology Taping, and rehabilitation exercises.
In terms of hip arthritis, our osteopaths can treat the soft tissues such as the ligaments, tendons and muscles surrounding the hip, providing elite level care and rehabilitation to help alleviate some of the symptoms.
This can include deep tissue massage, articulation, stretching and exercise to help address other issues that may have been caused by the arthritis.
If you are suffering chronic pain, we may use shockwave therapy to help relieve some of the symptoms.
